Sergeant-at-Arms Sterling Hoffman then announced the birthdays and anniversaries.
The guest speaker was introduced, Ms. Kathy John, Kathy is an immigration and international affairs professional with more than 25 years’ experience and an astute insider’s perspective on the U.S. immigration system, including on those issues currently at the forefront of public debate. She served at the U.S. Department of Justice, Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR), for more than 20 years as an attorney, manager, program director, and policy maker and has taught immigration politics and policy as an adjunct professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She currently is the president of 2KJohn Associates, an immigration and human rights consulting and research support business that she began in early 2017. 

Her primary areas of interest and expertise are: 

• U.S. Immigration law and policy.
• Immigration and politics. 
• Asylum, Convention Against Torture, and human rights country conditions.
• Removal (deportation) proceedings.
• Immigration fraud, including the unauthorized practice of immigration law. 
• Education, training, and public speaking.

She has received numerous accolades and awards throughout her career, including the EOIR Excellence in Management Award, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Director’s Award for Effective Interagency Cooperation, and a special Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Service Partnership Recognition.  Following an engaging question and answer session,
President Elect Lisa McCurdy presented the tree certificate to the speaker.
