President Abe read a speech which was written in coordination with Mike Carmichael.
“Although I have many ideas and plans for my year as President, I want you to know I understand the limits on what I can do by myself.

Of course everything we do as a club involves many people. But also under our constitution the President basically reports to the Board, not the other way around.  Committees are also controlled by the Board.  I may have goals, but cannot commit the club to anything without Board approval and partnership.

The Board is also the only authority that can approve spending our money.  It does that by approving a budget and sometimes by ordering specific changes to the budget.  I know that neither the Club President nore any committee has authority to ecceeed a budget limit.  I hope you are encouraged by that.

Last year President Ross set us all a good example.  He reengaged the Board in taking responsibility for hard decisions, including raising dues, and on that item led a town meeting for all members.  There were multiple Board meetings on such things as the budget and deciding whether to have this year’s Duck ace.  When decisions were made, Board members understood the issues and reached general consensus.  And then Ross made sure the Board’s decisions were carried out, including strong spending controls to stay within the Board’s budget:

I also understand that I and the Board report to you.  If you have any ideas or concerns durthing the year, please raise them with me or with any of our Board members.  This is your club- our club – and we want to meet your needs.

We also want to ensure that we are being transparent in what we do.  More than a year ago, the RI Council on Legislation created a requirement that all clubs make Board minutes available to members within 60 days of a meeting.  Nicole Butler will make sure that happens.  Please pay attention to what is going on and keep us on track.  Together, we can have a very good year!”

President Abe then thanked Mike Carmichael and mentioned there would be two town halls occurring this year.

Howard Davis ran the raffle for the week.  Stephan won the small pot of $22.
Hospitality was run by Balraj Gupta and Kenneth Brown.
