CEO, Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington

Gabrielle Webster joined Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington (BGCGW), a Major Grant Recipient of the Washington, DC Rotary Club, after a successful corporate and non-profit career. Prior to BGCGW, Ms. Webster was the Chief Development Officer at the United Way of the National Capital Area. In this role she was responsible for the development of the strategic direction, assessment, organization and implementation of all philanthropic endeavors. Before United Way, she served as a National Vice President for the American Heart Association where she was charged with the development, implementation and execution of a new national business to consumer campaign. Prior to that role, she was Vice-President of the Mid-Atlantic Region’s Leukemia & Lymphoma Society where she managed a $36M budget across nine states. Before her career in the nonprofit sector, Gabrielle spent over a decade with the Eastman Kodak Company and held a number of leadership positions in marketing, sales, university relations and engineering technology. Gabrielle is a National Science Foundation Fellow, a National Biomedical Symposium Fellow and a Polaroid Scholar. She was chosen to attend the Center for Creative Leadership in 2009 as one of the top executive directors at the American Heart Association. She is a graduate of Leadership Greater Washington 2013. She received her Bachelors of Science in Chemistry from Xavier University and a Masters of Physical Chemistry from Atlanta University. She and her husband reside in Upper Marlboro, Maryland and they have one daughter.

President, 2KJohn Associates

Kathy is an attorney and international affairs professional with more than 25 years’ experience and an astute insider’s perspective on the U.S. immigration system, including on those issues currently at the forefront of public debate. She served most of her career at the U.S. Department of Justice, Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR), where she held a variety of legal, managerial, program director, and policy-making positions. Most recently, she served from 2010 to 2015 as Director of EOIR’s Immigration Fraud Prevention Program and as an Associate General Counsel. She received numerous accolades and awards during her tenure with EOIR, including the agency’s Excellence in Management Award, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Director’s Award for Effective Interagency Cooperation, and a special Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Service Partnership Recognition. She taught immigration politics and policy as an adjunct professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill subsequent to leaving federal service and in 2017 established 2KJohn Associates, an immigration and human rights consulting and research support business. She is a native of North Carolina and received her B.A. in history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her J.D. from the Catholic University of America. She received a master’s degree in international policy and practice (M.I.P.P.) from the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University in 2009. She is a member the District of Columbia Bar and the U.S. Supreme Court Bar. She also is a member of the Federal Bar Association’s Immigration Law and International Law Sections.

CEO, Inova Schar Cancer Institute

Donald “Skip” Trump, MD, joined the Inova Schar Cancer Institute (ISCI) as its Chief Executive Officer on January 5, 2015. Before coming to Inova, Dr. Trump served as president and CEO of Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) in Buffalo, NY.  Dr. Trump has held previous appointments with the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute and School of Medicine, Duke University Medical Center, University of Wisconsin, and the Johns Hopkins University. 

Dr. Trump is a medical oncologist who specializes in the treatment of patients with genitourinary cancers, especially prostate and bladder cancer. He has received peer reviewed research funding from the National Cancer Institute, the Department of Defense and the American Cancer Society.  His personal research work has involved the development of vitamin D-based approaches to cancer prevention and therapy.  Since his assuming the position of CEO, ISCI in 2015, he has recruited more the 30 cancer clinicians and scientists to develop ISCI program in drug discovery, biomarker development, clinical genomics and clinical cancer trials.  ISCI established the first Molecular Tumor Board in the Spring of 2016.

Dr. Trump earned his medical degree at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, where he also completed his internship, residency and medical oncology fellowship training.  He served as chief resident in internal medicine at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Work of the Virginia Hospital Center Medical Brigade in Honduras

Barry Byer, MD

In 1999 Dr. Barry Byer, MD founded and now serves as President of the board of the Virginia Hospital Center Medical Brigade, a nonprofit humanitarian aid organization that provides potable water, sanitation, smokeless stoves, recycled eyeglasses, physical therapy and surgery to some of the poorest of the poor in Honduras. The VHC Medical Brigade sends 8-10 teams to Honduras every year and supports three clinics in remote mountain areas.

Dr. Byer is a Fellow in the American Academy of Family Practice, recently retired after practicing family medicine for 40 years in Falls Church, VA. He was Chief of Family Practice at Virginia Hospital Center since 1980 and an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at Georgetown University Medical School. He received his MD degree from the University of Miami, School of Medicine and interned at Marion County General Hospital, Indiana University Medical Center, Indianapolis, IN.  Early in his career he served his country in the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps at the National Heart and Lung Institute of NIH in Bethesda, MD.

Dr. Byer is currently Vice President of the McLean, VA Rotary Club and will assume the role of President in July.

Wolfgang Rennert, MD

Dr. Wolfgang Rennert is Vice-President of the board of the Virginia Hospital Center Medical Brigade and also serves as Medical Director of the Rostropovich Foundation of Global Health.  He is a recognized expert in areas of public and global health.

Dr. Rennert  currently serves as a professor in the Department of Perdiatrics at the Georgetown University School of Medicine and is Director of their Residency Program.   His medical degree is from Albert Ludwig University, Freiburg, Germany; his internships and residency were at Georgetown University Hospital; and he was a Fellow at the Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, South Africa.

Ward 3 D.C. Councilmember

Councilmember Cheh has served on the Council of the District of Columbia since 2007 and is currently the Chair of the Committee on Transportation and the Environment. An attorney and constitutional law professor, Cheh has championed legislation to protect the environment, improve the health of District residents, and fight for good government. She previously chaired the Committee on Business, Consumer, and Regulatory Affairs (2007-2008) and the Committee on Government Operations (2008-2010). Over the last six years, Councilmember Cheh has introduced over 400 separate bills, and led five major Council investigations, including ones on Executive personnel practices and electronic voting in the District. 

Councilmember Cheh is a tenured constitutional law and criminal procedure professor at the George Washington University Law School and a member and former chair of the George Washington Law Public Interest Committee. She is the Elyce Zenoff Research Professor of Law, and is the recipient of numerous teaching and service awards at the University. Councilmember Cheh has served as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney, worked pro bono for the Centre for Applied Legal Studies in South Africa, served as a consultant to the National Institute of Justice and the President’s Commission on Organized Crime, chaired the subcommittee on criminal justice for the D.C. Circuit Court’s Task Force on Gender, and serves as a member of the Rules Committee of the Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces and on the Board of Directors of the National Institute of Military Justice. She is a member of the ACLU Litigation Screening Committee.

Councilmember Cheh is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Douglass College, and received her law degrees from Rutgers and Harvard Universities. She is admitted to practice in Massachusetts, the District of Columbia, and before the federal courts. She has lived in D.C.’s Ward 3 for over 30 years, where she raised her two daughters, Jane and Nora, who are both attorneys.

Attorney General of the District of Columbia

Mr. Racine is the first elected Attorney General of the District of Columbia. With his inauguration in 2014, the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) began an era of independence for the agency and accountability to District residents. As the chief legal officer for the District, Attorney General Racine relies on his 25 years of legal and leadership experience to advise the Mayor and District agencies, defend the city in court, and use the law to advance the public interest. He has prioritized data-driven juvenile justice reform, consumer protection efforts aimed at assisting the District’s most vulnerable residents, measures to advance democracy and safeguard public integrity, and legal actions to protect affordable housing in communities across the District. Attorney General Racine has broad and deep legal experience, with a career that spans representing indigent residents in the D.C. Public Defender Service and volunteering as a law student in a clinic supporting migrant farm workers’ rights to serving as Associate White House Counsel in the first Clinton Administration and practicing white-collar and commercial litigation with leading law firms. He was the first African-American managing partner of a top-100 US law firm, Venable LLP, where he led a team of over 600 attorneys, and has also served on the District’s Judicial Nomination Commission. A lifelong District resident, Attorney General Racine attended Murch Elementary School, Deal Junior High School, Wilson High School, and graduated from St. Johns College High School. He also played basketball in youth sports leagues across the city. His commitment to equal justice was inspired by his parents who fled authoritarian rule in Haiti to start a new life in the United States, and by the lawyers of the Civil Rights Movement who used the law to effect positive social change. Outside of his official role, he remains involved with a variety of causes, including youth literacy and mentoring. Mr. Racine earned his Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Pennsylvania and his Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law.

Executive Director, Central American Resource Center (CARECEN)

Abel Núñez joined CARECEN as its Executive Director in March 2013. Prior to CARECEN, he was Associate Director of Centro Romero in Chicago, IL, and was primarily responsible for the day to day operations, fiscal management, program administration, and communications.

Mr. Núñez migrated from El Salvador to the United States with his family in 1979 and grew up in the District of Columbia.  Mr. Núñez has a Bachelor’s of Business Administration from Hofstra University. Before he moved to Chicago, he worked in D.C. for the Latino Civil Rights Center. From 1998 to 2000, he was also on the staff of CARECEN serving first as its Citizenship and Civic Participation Project Coordinator and later as its Deputy Director.

Mr. Núñez’ volunteerism reflects his lifelong pursuit of justice and empowerment for immigrants in the U.S. He served as Co-President of Organization of the Northeast (ONE), a nonprofit agency that aims to build a successful multi-ethnic, mixed-economic community on Chicago’s northeast side. He also served as Community Co-Chair of the Alliance for Research in Chicago Communities, a project of Northwestern University that supports community-based participatory research. He worked tirelessly with city and state coalitions to pass the Illinois Dream Act.

Nationally, Mr. Núñez has been one of the founding members of the Residency Now campaign which was launched in January 2012.   He also co-founded the DC-MD-VA Coalition in Support of Children Fleeing Violence which responded to the incoming wave of unaccompanied children in the summer of 2013.  He currently serves on the Board of Directors of La Clinica del Pueblo and also serves on the Community Advisory Board of Georgetown-Howard Universities Center for Clinical and Translational Science (GHUCCTS).  In 2017 Mr. Núñez has been the recipient of Georgetown University’s John Thompson, Jr. Legacy of a Dream Award and the Hispanic Bar Association of DC Hugh A. Johnson Jr. Memorial Award.

CEO, American Red Cross in the National Capital Region

Linda Mathes is the Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross in the National Capital Region which includes the District of Columbia; Virginia counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William; Maryland counties of Montgomery and Prince George’s; and cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas and Manassas Park, VA. Ms. Mathes is charged with responsibility to carry out the mission of the American Red Cross throughout this regional community and to support other communities across the country and around the world.

Ms. Mathes was recently named in Washington Magazine's "100 Most Powerful Women." She was selected for the Influential Women of Virginia Award in 2014. She was selected for the Women Who Mean Business Award 2013, a Most Admired CEO Award, and Readers' Choice Award for Most Admired CEO of Nonprofit Organizations all sponsored by the Washington Business Journal. Ms. Mathes was the 2006-2008 elected Chair of the Association of Metro Managers, the 45 largest Red Cross chapters in the USA. 

Ms. Mathes began her career with the Red Cross in 1973 at the Dallas County Chapter/Northeast Texas Division. She served in several leadership positions at the national headquarters of the American Red Cross in Washington, DC from 1978-1986; Executive Director of the Pittsburgh-Allegheny County Red Cross Chapter in Pennsylvania from 1986-1991; and was appointed CEO of the American Red Cross of the National Capital Area in 1991. Ms. Mathes is a cum laude graduate of Vanderbilt University and received her master’s in public administration from the University of Southern California, Washington Public Affairs Center.

Founder, Domestic Violence Legal Empowerment and Appeals Project

Professor Joan Meier is a nationally recognized expert on domestic violence and the law, appellate litigation, and clinical law teaching. In her more than 20 years at George Washington University, she has founded three interdisciplinary domestic violence clinical programs, two of which provided legal representation, advocacy, and counseling to victims of domestic violence and have been recognized by the U.S. Department of Justice as leading national models. In addition to her years of litigation and teaching, Professor Meier has co-written several significant pieces of federal and state legislation, and frequently delivers presentations and trainings to attorneys, judges, and other professional organizations. She has published widely on domestic violence, and received the Cahn Award from the National Equal Justice Library for her article on domestic violence and welfare reform. Professor Meier's scholarship focuses on custody and abuse litigation, in particular the misuse of psychological science in custody litigation.

In 2003 Professor Meier founded the Domestic Violence Legal Empowerment and Appeals Project (DV LEAP), which provides pro bono appellate representation in compelling domestic violence cases, including Supreme Court cases, and trains attorneys and courts around the country. In 2009, Professor Meier received the Inaugural Sharon Corbitt Award from the American Bar Association Commission on Domestic Violence. She has also received Doris Buffett’s Sunshine Lady Peace Award, and DV LEAP has received Justice for Children’s Leadership Award, the Washington Area Women’s Foundation Leadership Award, and the Mary Byron Foundation Celebrating Solutions Award in 2006, In 2011, DV LEAP received a two-year $450,000 grant award from the Dept of Justice Office on Violence Against Women to provide trainings on the misuses of science in custody and abuse litigation, in partnership with the Leadership Council on Interpersonal Violence and Child Abuse.

Professor Meier is regularly interviewed in the media on domestic violence issues and was one of the featured commentators in the groundbreaking PBS documentary, “Breaking the Silence: Children’s Voices.” She previously practiced in two national law firms and in two public interest organizations providing legal services and freedom of information litigation. She graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University in 1980, cum laude from the University of Chicago Law School in 1983, and clerked on the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals.

At the law school, Professor Meier teaches the Domestic Violence Project, a clinical course in which students work with community organizations on domestic violence legal advocacy. She has also taught criminal law and family law at GW and as a visiting professor at Washington & Lee. Her research and publications focus on domestic violence, criminal procedure and civil rights, child custody, and misapplication of social science theories.

CEO, Protect Our Defenders

Colonel Scott Jensen, USMC (ret.) is the Chief Executive Officer of Protect Our Defenders. Commissioned in 1989 and designated a Naval Aviator in 1992. Col Jensen served in various command, operations, maintenance, and logistics assignments in operational units where he participated in peace keeping operations in Somalia, noncombatant evacuation operations in Rwanda, Operation Southern Watch in Kuwait, and combat operations in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

He commanded at various levels to include: Platoon; Headquarters Squadron; Light Attack Detachment; Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron; Marine Aircraft Group; and Marine Aircraft Wing (Forward). Additionally, he served as an instructor and staff officer in various positions to include: The Basic School; the Aide-de-Camp to the Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps; the Joint Staff J-8; and as an Assistant Wing Commander.

Col Jensen completed his military service by serving as the Chief of the Marine Corps’ Behavioral Programs at Headquarters Marine Corps where he was responsible for developing and leading a portfolio of programs that included the Marine Corps’ Sexual Assault Prevention and Response, Suicide Prevention, Domestic Violence Prevention and Response, Community Counseling Services, and Substance Abuse and Drug Demand Reduction Programs. Upon his retirement and prior to joining POD, Col Jensen served as the Assistant Vice President for Leadership Development Programs at the American Council on Education in Washington, DC.

Col Jensen holds a bachelor of science degree in mathematics from the United States Naval Academy, a masters degree in military studies from Marine Corps University, and a masters degree in national security and strategic studies from the Naval War College.

His personal decorations include two Legion of Merit medals, three Bronze Star Medals, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, the Air Medal with strike/flight numeral “22”, two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals one with combat “V”, the Joint Service Achievement Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon.

Ambassador of Iraq to the United States of America

His Excellency Dr. Fareed Yasseen is Iraq’s ambassador to the United States of America. He previously served as the Iraqi ambassador to France for six-and-a-half years, from May 2010 until he stepped down in October 2016. Prior to the end of his tenure in Paris, the experienced diplomat was awarded the Republican Medal of Honor—an award rarely given to outgoing ambassadors—by Mr. Christian Masset, secretary general of France’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on behalf of the French Presidency.

Before serving as Iraq’s representative in France, Ambassador Yasseen held a number of posts within the Government of Iraq, including as the head of policy planning of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and diplomatic adviser to former Deputy President Mr Adil Abd al-Mahdi. He has also worked and consulted for numerous United Nations agencies and leading think tanks.

Ambassador Yasseen was educated in Iraq, Switzerland, and the United States. Prior to joining the diplomatic service, he trained as a physicist and worked as a researcher in Europe and the United States, and later developed a strong interest in political activism and human rights advocacy. His experience and achievements will prove vital in contributing towards a closer relationship between the US and Iraq, both economically and politically.
