Our club gave Earth Conservation Corps a $4,560 Community Service Grant in 2016. The DuPont Circle Rotary Club supports them with man power. They need 50 people to complete these projects and thought it would be a great idea for us to support them in this.

This year, the Rotary Club of Dupont Circle has partnered with the Earth Conservation Corps, ECC, to revitalize the wetlands near their office in the Anacostia area. The wetlands around the Earth Conservation Corps building at 1520 First St. SE are the last and only natural wetlands in the entire District of Columbia. This will be a multi-effort push to restore and expand the wetlands as well as provide critical community service dialogue facilitation workshops to underserved DC residents.

On October 14th, we will kick off the event in the morning with a quick introduction of the project, a bite to eat, and instruction on the methods; then we will get to work in the wetlands. This day will be all about pulling out invasives such as weeds, flowers, and fallen branches. October 14 is the most critical day in our restoration project as we will need to remove all the invasive plants before we can begin to heal the wetland with new native species.

On October 21st, we will be focused on planting new native plants in the wetlands. The soil and shoreline of the wetlands will have had a week to adapt to the changing environment and begin to heal with adding non-invasive plants. We will have a specialist on hand both days to help lead us through the process of identifying invasives verses non-invasives and best practices.

After the planting phase of the wetlands restoration project is complete, we will work with district residents to organize several workshops based around teaching basic dialogue and facilitation skills. By providing a safe space for residents to discuss their anger and fears with encroaching development, paired with learning how to effectively communicate when in talks with development corporations, this will positively benefit them to be understood and represented at a higher level.
