President Ross opened the meeting at 12:32 pm led in a pledge of allegiance to our flag.

Russ Savage led the inspiration and a prayer for law enforcement officers. The prayer followed with a moment of silence: “At this troubling time for our country, as tensions and violence arise between the minority community and law enforcement, let us join in prayer. Gracious God, be with us as we face difficult and painful issues among us. Hold us in your steady embrace of love and understanding and forgiveness. Open our eyes that we may see the decades of injustice and oppression which are just now beginning to become clear, and that we may appreciate the complexity of law enforcement. Remind us that in your sight each of your children are of equal value.  None is more precious than another, and none less so. Teach us the ways of listening, of healing and reconciliation, that we may become one at last and live in peace with one another. This is our prayer, and let us all say together, Amen.”

President David Treadwell opened the meeting at 12:30 pm, leading the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

As is traditional this year for the fifth Wednesday of the month, Jim Freeman used the words of inspiration time to inspire us with a piece of Rotary history.  He reminded us that Paul Harris founded the club 111 years ago when he was 37. Our Washington club is 104 years old. It was 25 years ago when President George H.W. Bush and the RI president met and spoke of reforestation efforts. President Bush established “Trees for the Capital” and placed the Park Service in charge, with Rotary becoming a partner. In 1932 Harris visited five continents and planted trees as a symbol of international cooperation.  Perhaps now our club’s Trees for the Capital effort should become Trees for the Capitals around the world.

Cherry Baumbusch presented very moving words of inspiration in remembrance of the many lives lost to a shooter at a gay dance club in Orlando.  She asked for a moment of silence and read comments from her son, who is gay. Taking a suggestion from the taxi driver who drove her to Rotary, she also read from a poem on the wall of the United Nations building in Geneva, written by the 13th century Persian poet Saadi:
The sons of Adam are limbs of each other,
Having been created of one essence.
When the calamity of time affects one limb
The other limbs cannot remain at rest.
If you have no sympathy for the troubles of others,
You are unworthy to be called by the name of a Human.

My father had warned me, “Don’t Babble. Don’t Bray. / For you never can tell who might hear what you say.”
My father had warned me, “Boy, button your lip.”/And I guess that I should have.  I made a bad slip.

President David opened the meeting at 12:30 pm.

This being the fifth Wednesday of the month, Jim Freeman presented a piece of Rotary history as our Words of Inspiration.  He noted there are repressive dictators over much of the world, some certifiably insane. Looking back at the dictatorship of Adolph Hitler, Jim told the history of Rotary in Germany during the rise of the Nazi party.  At first the party encouraged its members to join Rotary as a means of pushing propaganda and at one point half of club members were party members.  Then party members started forcing Jews from the clubs; some other Rotarians quit in protest. Before long the Nazi party forbade its members from joining Rotary or Freemasonry, because the standards of those groups were incompatible with the Nazi agenda. It is important for Rotarians to take stands for our values.

President David opened the meeting at 12:30 p.m. and led the pledge of Allegiance.

Matt Ford presented the Words of Inspiration with the poem that his father used to read to him: “The Desiderata”.  As this is a poem of solid advice with nearly every sentence being a point of reference for some larger life meaning I shall post it in its entirety: Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.  Keep interested in your own career, however humble, it's a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery.  But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

In Stefan Alber’s Words of Inspiration, he shared the essence of the 2014 book, Why Science Does not Disprove God, by science writer and researcher Amir Aczel.   Drawing on a wide range of interviews with Nobel prize winners and prominent scientists as well as spiritual leaders, Aczel makes his point:  For all we know about the Big Bang and evolution, for example, we still cannot explain life, intelligence and consciousness, or perfection in the universe. Faith and religion, despite all the flaws, remains the source of comfort and refuge as we humans transit through life.

The following Meeting in Review notes are a reasonable facsimile of actual events that occurred at the Rotary Club of DC on Wednesday, the 12th of August, 2015, in the University Club, Washington, DC. On the one day that I, Sterling Hoffman, your officially-appointed "scribe", should have been EARLY for this duty, I was conspicuously absent for the first 30 minutes of the luncheon meeting. Metro delays caused by "single-tracking" is the excuse I am using. My attempt to sneak into the arena unnoticed was thwarted by, of all things, my attire. As you see, the dress code for this particular meeting had been relaxed to allow Hawaiian-styled shirts. My shirt was exceedingly loud and boisterous and when coupled with the seersucker suit…unobtrusive entering to assuage my embarrassment was not an option.

Starting at 12:30, President David led the Pledge of Allegiance and introduced Tony Cusack to provide the Words of Inspiration.

Tony focused on the inspiration of the life of fellow Rotarian Ed O'Brien, who passed away suddenly last Thursday.  Tony spoke of Ed’s generosity as a mentor, including advising Tony on setting up his own charitable organization.  Then Tony read Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s “A Psalm of Life,” noting that Ed did leave “footprints on the sands of time” that do inspire others.  He ended with a prayer of thanksgiving for Ed’s life and asked for comfort for Ed’s wife, May, and their families.

We will all miss seeing Secretary Haleh Vaziri at the head table, hearing her welcome visitors, and reading her Meetings in Review. In this new Rotary year she serves as a board member and in a number of other significant roles (including production of the monthly newsletter for prospective members), and I get to serve as secretary. So, let me get started with a review of what happened at our lunch meeting of July 1, the first day of David Treadwell’s year as club president.

President Jennifer Hara called us to order at 12:30 PM, leading members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. She invited Bill Dent to offer words of inspiration. He spoke about the joy and inspiration he derives from diverse activities—enjoying music as a choir member, working with nature, appreciating the fine arts and meditating. Suggesting that all of us take a few moments every day to be alone with our own thoughts and feelings, Bill highly recommended meditation.

President Jennifer called us to order at 12:30 PM, leading members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. She asked Christian Lungarotti to offer words of inspiration. He invoked the wisdom of 12th-century Catholic friar Saint Francis of Assisi who abandoned his worldly possessions to live a modest life. Saint Francis advised that we first “do what is necessary,” then “do what is possible” and eventually we will notice that we are “doing the impossible.” As Christian remarked, Saint Francis’ words resonate with Rotarians seeking to improve the world in small and large ways.

Salaam and hello fellow Rotarians! I am glad to report on what happened during our 25 February meeting.

With President Jennifer taking a well-earned vacation in the Dominican Republic, President Elect David Treadwell called us to order at 12:30 PM. After leading members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, he called on Laura Khor to provide words of inspiration. She noted that the Academy Awards broadcast aired on Sunday, 22 February as a celebration of story-telling. Among those lost in 2014 and memorialized during the broadcast was actor Robin Williams, one of the best story tellers ever who brought great humor and humanity to his performances. Laura opined that the most memorable stories and story tellers touch on the questions we ask about our words and deeds in the Rotary Four-way Test: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build good will and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

President Jennifer called the meeting to order at 12:30 PM, leading us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. She asked John Jackson to offer words of inspiration. John explained that he was standing in for Russ Savage who was in Virginia leading an Ash Wednesday service. Thankful for Rotarians’ support of the Salvation Army, John pointed to Sharon Taylor’s and Marta Pentassuglia’s participation in the previous night’s Grate Patrol amid frigid temperatures and indicated that he is working with Nancy Riker to define his organization’s role on our 25 April Rotary Day. John closed with the Bible’s counsel to love our neighbors as we love ourselves.

Hello fellow Rotarians! I am pleased to detail what transpired during our 11 February meeting.

President Jennifer called us to order at 12:30 PM. After leading members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, she called on Monica Smith to deliver words of inspiration.

A historian, Monica reminded us that Thomas Edison was born on 11 February 1847, explaining that his life teaches us lessons about individual achievement and team work. This most prolific American inventor, with 1,093 patents to his name, was a great self-promoter. Yet Edison did not work alone, creating a lab for research and development in Menlo Park, New Jersey to collaborate with hundreds of scientists, machinists, carpenters, glass workers and others during his career. Thanks to his Menlo Park and West Orange labs, which he dubbed “invention factories,” Edison should be better known for inventing the modern R&D lab. As Monica noted, Edison’s contemporary Andrew Carnegie declared that “Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision ... to direct individual accomplishments toward organizational objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results.” Monica observed that we Rotarians resemble Edison and his team. By combining our abilities to work toward a common vision, we exemplify the power of collaboration to help our communities and change the world.

Words of Inspiration were offered by Buz Gorman who spoke about Enthusiasm (with much enthusiasm in his voice). He told the story of going to a Rotary Club meeting with his father when he was 12 years old. The guest speaker was a 90-year-old nun who talked about her figurine collection—not a topic that would remotely interest a 12-year-old boy. Yet the nun was so enthusiastic that Buz was captivated by her talk. So be enthusiastic in all you do and say because the feeling is contagious!

After leading us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, she called on Pat Cunningham for words of inspiration. Pat drew from swimmer Diana Nyad’s TED Talk titled “Never, Ever Give Up.” Nyad is the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage. Confronting venomous jelly fish, large sharks and the turbulent Florida Straits, she tried this swim and failed four times. Scientists, endurance experts and her closest friends repeatedly told her that this feat would be impossible. Yet on 2 September 2013, after 53 hours in the water swimming 110 miles, Diana Nyad achieved her goal at age 64. As she declares, “Never, ever give up!”

Reading a passage from the Prayer of St. Francis, Nancy requested that when we hear the word “Lord,” we think of whatever higher power or inner truth each of us embraces:

Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Lord, grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive…

President Jennifer Hara called our meeting to order at 12:30 PM, asking members to join her in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. She then invited Ed O’Brien to offer us inspiration as he commemorated legendary writer James Baldwin’s life. Ed shared three quotes to “give us a flavor of the man.” About the United States, Baldwin declared, “I love America more than any other country in the world and exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her.” Regarding change, he asserted, “Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” Most profoundly, Baldwin proclaimed, “Love takes off the masks that we fear we cannot live without and know we cannot live within. I use the word ‘love’ not merely in the personal sense but as a state of being, or a state of grace—not in the infantile American sense of being made happy, but in the tough and universal sense of quest and daring and growth.”

She invited Valentin Solis to offer words of inspiration; he shared an excerpt of his favorite passage from the First Book of Corinthians, reminding us that we have nothing without love in our lives. “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.”

Greetings fellow Rotarians! I am pleased to share the details of our 6 August gathering.

President Jennifer Hara called the meeting to order at 12:30 PM. After leading members in the Pledge of Allegiance, she turned to Dick Pyle for words of inspiration. Lamenting the bad news from around the world, Dick underscored the need to find hope. He recounted two stories of individuals dispelling stereotypes, one in Jamaica and the other in Mali. Amid myriad international conflicts, the impact of individuals seems slight. Yet as Dick asserted, collections of individuals—such as the Rotarians and Peace Corps volunteers he has known—have the power to multiply the impact of refuting stereotypes so as to forge positive relationships across cultures, ultimately creating hope for a better, more peaceful world.

Hello fellow Rotarians! I am glad to share the minutes of our 30 July gathering.

President Jennifer Hara called the meeting to order at 12:30 PM, again reminding Rotarians to arrive on time while several entered the University Club’s dining room. After leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance, she invited Nobutoshi Hanai to deliver words of inspiration. He read from Inazo Nitobe’s book Bushido: The Soul of Japan published in1900. “Bushido,” translates as “the military-knight’s ways.” Essential elements of this Samurai ethical code are justice and courage, universally valued virtues.

A NEW BEGINNING

Hello fellow Rotarians! I am humbled to serve as your club secretary charged with recording the minutes of our weekly gatherings.

Our 2 July meeting marked the launch of President Jennifer Hara’s term. She called the meeting to order at 12:30 PM, leading members in the Pledge of Allegiance. She then introduced Johnny Allem to deliver words of inspiration. Reading from Alice Walker’s 2006 book We Are the Ones We Have Been Waiting for: Inner Light in a Time of Darkness, Johnny reminded Rotarians that positive change comes from within each of us.

Beware of Rotary Online Scams
StoryThumbnail
Rotary International published an announcement that several Rotarians have recently reported receiving fraudulent emails, including one with the subject line "Proposed Rotary Visit." It fraudulently claims to be from a Rotary club president in Nigeria asking for information to help coordinate exchanges or to partner on projects.

Also be aware of Facebook pages or other websites using the Rotary logo without permission in order to solicit money and imply a relationship with Rotary.

Dutch Student Looking for Internship

Dear Mr. Klaus, My name is Jelger Rozendaal, I am 16 years old and I attend upper secondary school in the Netherlands. I have chosen to follow a bilingual programme at my school which includes a 2-3 week international internship in order to develop my English further and to be inspired to pursue an international career. My ambitions solidly point me in the direction of trade, economics and business. Therefore I hope to do my internship within the financial sector of a business company. The Rotary Club is an organisation that brings business and professional leaders together, I therefore would like to inquire if someone within your organisation is open to an intern in May this year for 2-3 weeks. Preferably someone who operates in the financial sector. I hope for your positive reply. Kind regards, Jelger Rozendaal P.S. I have more information about myself and about the internship in a letter from my school which I can send to you seperately if you are interested.

Historical Notes about Rotary
StoryThumbnail

DID YOU KNOW...Did you know that the tradition of club singing began at an early meeting of the first Rotary club in Chicago in 1905 when Harry Ruggles, the fifth man to join Paul Harris, jumped on a chair and urged everyone to join him in a song. Group singing soon became a traditional part of each Rotary meeting?

Editor's Note: Much to our club's loss but RC Reston's gain, Herb Brickson recently transferred his membership to the Rotary Club of Reston. Even though he transferred, he asked that we continue to publish the Historical Notes, which he provides. And we are very happy to oblige!

Rotarian Wins University Club Golf Tournament
The Rotary Foundation recognized the University Club staff by sponsoring two holes in the 7th Annual Albert R. Armstrong Memorial Golf Tournament. Proceeds benefit the University Club’s Foundation and its Armstrong Scholarship Fund, established to enhance the lives of employees and their children by helping to fund post-high school education. A few Rotarians enjoyed the greens at Westfields Golf Club—PP Jay Pugh, PP Andy Cook and Max Salas.

Max was also the big winner of the day, taking the U Club’s 2012 trophy.

April 25th Meeting in Review
StoryThumbnail

April 25th in Washington was a beautiful spring day.  The sky was blue and the flowers were all in bloom.  Hard not to be in a good mood in those conditions!  Shout out to Stronglegs Richardson!  Stronglegs, hope you are well and we miss you!

President Howard called the meeting to order in a timely fashion.  John Jackson gave us words of inspiration with a reminder of the good work done by Chuck Colson since the turbulent years of the early 70s!

Secretary Jennifer Hara announced the visitors for the week who included the following:  Jessica Hancock, an International Health Analyst with the US Department of Health and Human Services; Lisa McCurdy, managing partner of the Wealth Counselor, both guests of Abe Helal; Ken Kimbrough had a guest, Fred Michaud who is of counsel to Capshaw DeRieux LLP; David Klaus had a guest Brian Summers, the Intergovernmental Affairs Advisor for Chairman Kwame R. Brown of the Council of the District of Columbia;  Judy Freund and her husband Jim attended; Judy is a Rotary District Governor; Memo Grajales had as his guest Diego Grajales, his son!;  Elena Tscherny had as her guest Enrique Honorio, an architect with EDH Architects;  Glynis Long had as her guest Graham Long, her son who is a graduate of Seoul National University.  Dr. Kang, who we miss dearly, was his mentor; Jim Lanning had as his guest Dan Puls who is with International Aid and Development; Estela Landeros-Dugourd brought a guest, Luiz Ary Messina, a doctor of engineering; Estela also had as her guest her daughter, Estela Rueda, a graphic designer; Rob Warne had as his guest Javier Rodriguez, a Development Assistant with the Newseum; and Claudia Lingner attended the meeting and is a visiting Rotarian from Vienna, Austria.

President Howard announced the big news for the day, Estela Landeros-Dugourd has just become a U.S. Citizen and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance!  The Club sang the Star Spangled Banner in her honor.  Congratulations Estela!  We are very proud of your accomplishment!

Rob Warne introduced our guest for the day, Shelby Coffey.  Shelby has had a distinguished career in journalism, much too impressive to do it justice here.  He kept the audience greatly entertained with his personal stories and also of how much journalism has changed in the digital age.  Stories don’t take days to develop, they develop instantly with the likes of the internet and Twitter.  None of is sure whether that’s a good thing or not, given the ease by which questionable news stories get immediately spread far and wide.

David Brady handled the raffle.  Hospitality was handled by Balraj Gupta, Norm Coe and Stu ShallowayGinette Prosper was our greeter and Sheldon Ray won the small pot of the raffle, which I’m sure he’ll donate to the Rotary Foundation of Washington, DC.  The large pot is now $675 so keep playing!

Safe travels for all of those who are heading to the Rotary Convention in Bangkok.  Don’t forget the reception at Ross Grantham’s place!  Sounds like a lot of fun!  Happy birthday to Brian Wright and kudos to the following who had perfect attendance last Month:

Stefan Alber, Kenny Barnes, PP Monica, Myrna Charles, Lisa Cohen, Josette Conell, PP Andy, Pat Corcoran, P Howard, Bill Dent, Shaun English, Gus Gallagher, Peggy Garrett, Balraj Gupta, Violet Habwe, Gail Hamill, Jennifer Hara, Tim Hurd, Davis Kennedy, Ken Kimbrough, PE David, Irene Koerner, Alexander Kravetz, PDG Larry, Clara Montanez, Maria-Nelly Pavisich, PP Jay, Dick Pyle, Sheldon Ray, Antje Ruhfus, Nadia Saad, Peg Schoen, Marjorie Scott, Walter Sechriest, Stu Shalloway, Alexander Sharayera, Bill Simons, Hal Vaughn, Larry Wang, Kathy Ward, Bob Watson, Mark Wilson and Quentin Wodon!

A Reminder about the University Club Dress Code
StoryThumbnail
Monday through Friday, the dress code in the Club is "business casual."  Business casual for men, is defined as creased slacks (no denim), collared shirt (polo/dress shirt) and non-athletic shoes, which is acceptable throughout the Clubhouse except in the Taft Dining Room for lunch and dinner, where a jacket is required for men.  Comparable attire is required for ladies (no denim or athletic shoes).

Rotary Club of Washington, DC Victimized by Nationwide Check Fraud Scam

In 2009, the Rotary Club of Washington, DC, discovered it was the victim of a check fraud scam being perpetrated by what is believed to be a number of individuals throughout the country.  The checks are being sent to persons who attempt to sell items online.

The checks are issued in amounts in excess of the item being purchased and the seller is then asked to send the excess to a person through wire transfer. We have been alerted to other similar methods intended to scam money out of unsuspecting inviduals.

Please continue to be vigilant and check with our office if you have any questions.
