Panel on Bonsai Trees
The author of The Peace Tree from Hiroshima: The Little Bonsai with a Big Story, Ms. Moore began her writing career in a US Senator’s office and worked as a journalist focusing on stories about families and children. She and her family live close to Washington, DC’s National Arboretum where she first encountered her story’s protagonist —a bonsai tree that is almost 400 years old and miraculously survived the bombing of Hiroshima. She believed that the true story of a Japanese family's devotion to the tree and their decision to donate it to the United States in an act of reconciliation and friendship would inspire and delight young readers. Ms. Moore is originally from the Maine coast, which shares with Japan a wealth of islands that are dotted with magnificent pine trees.
